What Makes a Room a Wet Room

A wet room is defined by the whole room being waterproofed, not just the shower enclosure. That is the entire distinction. A standard bathroom waterproofs a pan inside a curb and treats the rest of the floor as dry space. A wet room treats the room as the wet area, with the floor sloped to a drain and an open shower that has no raised threshold at all.

Whole-room waterproofing. Waterproofing material goes over the shower walls and floor, carries up the surrounding walls above the splash line, and is only then covered with tile. Corners, penetrations and the door threshold get detailed, and we flood test before tile.

Floor slope. The finished floor falls toward the drain across its whole run, with no hump and no dead corner. That slope is built into the substrate, which usually means recessing or re-framing the floor so the finished tile still meets the hallway flush.

Linear drains. A linear drain takes the fall in one direction instead of four, so the floor tiles in large-format porcelain on a single plane rather than four quadrants around a center drain.

Materials and Technical Detail

Tile does two jobs here, drainage and grip. Porcelain is the default: dense, available in slip-resistant finishes, made in large formats that suit a single plane of slope. Glazed ceramic is the economical option. Mosaic works well on the sloped area because the extra grout lines follow the fall and add traction. Natural stone (marble, onyx, granite, slate) is less uniform in color and pattern and needs more planning, and polished stone is wrong underfoot in a room designed to be wet. Glass, metal and zellige make good accent bands, and encaustic tile holds its pattern through the full thickness. Staggered and offset settings hide small floor variation; herringbone and chevron belong on a wall.

Fittings matter as much as surfaces. We set a pressure-balanced valve so the water holds constant pressure with no temperature fluctuation when a toilet flushes elsewhere, or a thermostatic valve where the client wants the set temperature held exactly. Showerheads can be fixed, ceiling-mounted or a handheld on a slide bar, and most wet rooms use two on a diverter. Glass is optional here, which is the point, though one frameless splash panel keeps the toilet and towel bars dry.

Radiant floor heat earns its keep, run as resistive electric mats or hot water tubing, because it dries the floor faster between uses. Electrical follows the usual bathroom rules: GFCI at every receptacle, IP44 rated fixtures, and two light sources at the mirror set a foot or more apart.
