Countertop Materials We Fabricate and Install
Engineered quartz. Roughly 93 percent crushed aggregate bound with about 7 percent polyester resin. No sealing, better stain resistance than any other common household surface, and consistent slab to slab. That consistency is why it is the default where an island and a perimeter run have to match.
Granite. Quarried, second only to quartz for stain resistance. It seals, but an oleophobic impregnator pushes the interval out to every five to ten years. No two slabs are identical.
Quartzite. Metamorphic stone with hardness in the quartz range and veining that photographs beautifully. It seals, and it is harder on tooling than granite, which shows in fabrication cost.
Marble. Soft, porous, reactive to acid. Citrus and wine etch it. A honed finish hides etching better than a polish.
Solid surface. Acrylic or polyester sheet about 12mm thick. Its advantage is invisibility: joints are glued and sanded until they nearly disappear, and an integrated sink bonds underneath and sands flat.
Butcher block and wood. Warm, repairable, and the only surface here you can sand back to new.
Concrete. Cast in place, custom precast, or cut from machined gauged slabs.
Cultured marble. Polyester resin and marble dust cast in a mold with an integrated bowl. Reported at around four times the strength of natural granite or marble.
Laminate. High-pressure laminate over a 45# particle board, MDF or plywood substrate, post-formed or self-edge. Formica and Arborite are the recognizable names.

Edges, Cutouts and Seams: The Details That Show
Edge profiles. Rounded, ogee, built-up (two or three layers stacked and laminated, standard on solid surface), fire polished and bushed polished. We cut profiles on CNC where run length justifies it, because a machine holds the same radius for twenty feet, and finish by hand router and grinder where the geometry calls for it. Inconsistent edges make an expensive slab look cheap.
Sink cutouts. Three approaches, and they price differently for a reason:
- Self-rimming, also called drop-in. The hole is templated, the sink drops in from above, and the rim is clamped from below and reinforced with sealant. Least expensive, most forgiving.
- Bottom-mount, also called undermount. The cutout edge is exposed, finished and polished to the same standard as the outer edge, then sealed with silicone and supported from underneath. Nearly every Bellevue quartz and quartzite job specifies it.
- Integrated. On solid surface, the sink is glued to the underside and the joint sanded flat. On stainless, the basin is welded in. Nothing catches, because there is no rim.
Templating. Digital, after the cabinets are set and leveled, never before. The templater produces dxf files that can be laid over photographs of your actual slabs for virtual placement, so you see where the vein lands before a saw touches stone.
Seams. Any kitchen over about ten feet needs one. The craft is putting it where you do not look: not in the sink run, not in the sightline from the room entry, never across an unsupported span. You approve it before fabrication.
Standard dimensions. US counters run 25 to 26 inches front to back and sit 35 to 36 inches from the floor, with a slight front overhang for kick space.
How the Replacement Works

- Material selection. Showroom samples, or a slab yard appointment where you tag the physical slabs.
- Digital template. Roughly 60 to 90 minutes on site, with cabinets in final position and cleared.

- Installation day. Old tops out, new tops set, leveled and seamed, sink and faucet reconnected, leak checked.
